His passion to make a difference led him to give up his job in an MNC and teach under privileged children in a village.
My parents may have been unsupportive of my decisions, but that one smile on a child’s face is what I live for. Working for a MNC was not something I wanted to do. I always wanted to teach children and make their lives better. I quit my job and didn’t know what I was going to do. All I knew was my love for teaching and that’s where I was supposed to be.
I came to Majuli in Brahmaputra and taught for a year.I then came to a remote village nearby where the villagers requested me to open up a school for the children there, and so began my journey through teaching.During my college years, I saw some children working in the canteen and that upset me.That’s when I realized the need to do something to give such children the gift of education.I wanted to discard such inequality that our country faces. With my parents being unsupportive of my decision,I gave all the money I earned from my job to my parents. People came from far around to build the school with bamboo and wood. The remaining needs were fulfilled by crowd-sourced money and the school came to be known as ‘The Hummingbird School’.
We charged a minimal fee of rupees 250/- per month that would be affordable for all the villagers to keep the school functioning with its basic needs.NGOs have also been kind enough to help us in funding the school.Through this school, we not only teach the children basic curriculum but we also teach life-skills that they might need like bamboo weaving and carpentry. We also train them in theatre, music and dance. We strive for the all-round development of the child that doesn’t depend only on bookish knowledge. In 2017,my colleagues and I came up with a trust to extend our work and named it the ‘Ayang Trust’. I was never fascinated by the lush life or wanted to be rich. Today,I have just enough money to fulfil my basic needs and I’m happier than I’ve ever been because this is something I’ve always wanted to do and it’s what makes my heart truly smile.Teaching these kids is what I look forward to every morning and I couldn’t be happier about my decision of pursuing this path.
