What is the importance of adaptability in the changing edu-verse?
Adaptability refers to adjustments to one’s behaviours, thoughts and feelings in response to disruption. The pandemic certainly tested every student’s capacity to adjust to disruption. The switch to remote learning involved huge change and uncertainty. Part of our new normal is the increasing presence of online learning. What happens if students find it difficult to accept this new change and others overtime?
It could result in low motivation and poor academic performance overtime attributing to a disconnect from the steady classroom learning environment. Research has demonstrated positive links between adaptability and students’ engagement and achievement at school and university.
Adaptable students are better able to exercise control over their environment and resources and thereby avoid elements that can lead to failure, like anxiety, uncertainty, and procrastination. This helps to develop the quality of a student’s life, both personally and academically. Teaching students to be adaptable gives them a skill for life. This skill is helpful for navigating all sorts of challenges and disruptions.
It is the responsibility of teachers and parents to instil adaptability in students through awareness and practice. Both educators and children need to keep up with the changing edu-verse and the challenges that come with it through awareness to better manage their emotional quotient and ability to adapt. This will especially help students to foresee obstacles, identify them and manage them in the best possible way. It also helps them to keep up their motivation and bring in positivity in their lives. When their wellbeing is taken care of, students are more likely to succeed and live a fulfilling life.
